Access to the Profession

Access to the profession is governed by the Belgian Judicial Code. This determines that judicial officers are appointed by the King from among the candidates that have complied with a series of conditions. Candidates must namely hold a Master's degree or doctorate in law, have completed a two-year traineeship at one or more judicial officers’ firms and received a certificate from that traineeship. A judicial officer may only practice in the judicial district for which he is appointed. He may furthermore not practise any other profession, which therefore guarantees his independence and impartiality.

Royal Decree of 30 June 1993 on the traineeship for candidate judicial officers and the approval of that traineeship.
